Mission Statement

We are the Washington, DC office of the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung (hbs), a political foundation affiliated with the Green Party of Germany. We act as a catalyst for green visions and projects, a think tank for policy reform, and an international network.

As a 501(c)(3) organization, we promote policy reform and political dialogue in our program areas through publications, public seminars, conferences, workshops, study tours and visitor programs. We seek to advance democracy and human rights, protect the environment and climate, and promote the peaceful resolution of conflicts. We also place particular emphasis on gender democracy, meaning social emancipation and equal rights for women and LGBTI communities.

The Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung is a catalyst for green visions and projects, a think tank for policy reform, and an international network. We work with 200 project partners in over 60 countries and currently maintain 32 international offices.

Gender democracy is an overarching goal of our work and a cross-cutting theme for all activities of the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung. This concept addresses the deep-rooted structural, societal, and cultural causes of the persisting inequalities between men, women, and gender minorities. We integrate considerations of gender equality into all of our programs, building awareness in international political processes, institutions and networks and offering perspectives for gender-responsive policy and financing approaches.

Heinrich Böll is one of the most important and best-known writers of the Federal Republic of Germany. "Bound by the times and my contemporaries, to what my generation has lived through, experienced, seen, and heard," as he himself wrote, he was the critical chronicler of Germany’s history at mid-century.
