Rebecca Harms, co-president of the Greens/EFA in the European Parliament

Rebecca Harms, co-president of the Greens/EFA in the European Parliament, will visit Washington D.C. from October 27-31 for a series of meetings with U.S. officials, think tank experts and civil society representatives. In addition, Ms. Harms will speak at a panel discussion jointly organized by the Heinrich Böll Foundation and the Center on the U.S. and Europe at Brookings. The event titled “Ukraine Update: Elections, Conflict, and the Future of the EU's Eastern Partnership” will take place on October 29 from 2:00 to 5:15 pm. The discussion will focus on the need to reform the European Union’s Eastern Partnership in the wake of ongoing Ukraine crisis. In the context of intense regional tensions, the Partnership framework lies at the center of the re-evaluation of the European Neighborhood Policy overall. Rebecca Harms will answer thorny questions concerning the Eastern Partnership, Russia, NATO and the U.S.

Biography

Rebecca Harms is co-president of the Greens/EFA (European Free Alliance) group in the European Parliament.

Rebecca grew up in the German Wendland in the state of Lower Saxony. This is where the citizens' movement against the final repository for nuclear waste at Gorleben originated – a movement that has left a clear mark on her career. In 1994, she was elected to the regional parliament in Lower Saxony, where she was elected chairperson of the green parliamentary group in 1998. Since 1998, she has been a member of the party council of Bündnis 90/Die Grünen. After visiting the region surrounding the site of Fukushima’s nuclear disaster in 2011, she published a book titled “One day in Fukushima, One week in Japan.” Rebecca Harms is one of the vehement champions of ambitious climate policies and a sustainable economy.

In 2004, Rebecca became a member of the European Parliament, where she has served as co-president of the Greens/EFA since 2009. She is a Substitute Member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy as well as on the Committee on Foreign Affairs. In addition, she is a member of European Parliament’s Delegation on Ukraine.
