Hannah Winnick returned to the Heinrich Böll Stiftung Washington, DC in Summer 2022 as Executive Director of the Washington, DC, office.

From 2020 to 2022, she designed and launched the Obama Foundation’s “Leaders Europe'' Program, an intensive leadership development curriculum for activists, elected officials, NGO leaders and start-up founders. Through skill-building workshops, policy dialogues, peer-to-peer learning, and leadership coaching, the program annually supports 35 young Europeans to advance transformative social change in their countries and across the continent. As Deputy Director of Global Programs, Europe, Hannah also cultivated partnerships with European peer organizations, supported donor relations, and spearheaded strategy and new initiatives for the region.

From 2015 to 2020, Hannah served as the founding director of the Heinrich Böll Stiftung Washington DC’s Transatlantic Democracy Program. There, she brought together US and European policymakers and civil society leaders to tackle shared challenges to democracy, with a strong focus on migration, refugee, and integration policy, and on questions of national memory and historical reckoning.

Hannah’s previous work experience includes several years as transnational liaison to the Mexico office at Hispanics in Philanthropy, an organization dedicated to strengthening the Latino nonprofit sector in the US and Latin America. She also spent time with LEAD, the Mercator Capacity Building Center for Leadership and Advocacy in Berlin, researching new models of leadership in German diplomacy.

Hannah holds a Bachelor in Political Science from Amherst College and a Master in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School, where she focused on international negotiation and conflict resolution. She lives with her wife in Washington, DC.
