Who we are:

The Heinrich Böll Foundation

  • is a catalyst for green visions and projects
  • a think tank for policy reform, and an international network
  • is affiliated with but independent of the German Green Party
  • promotes the development of democratic civil society
  • defends equal rights and equal opportunities regardless of gender, sexual orientation,
    religion, ethnicity, or nationality
  • supports cultural projects as part of our civic education programmes
  • is mostly financed through public funds

The primary objectives guiding our work are

  • supporting democracy and human rights
  • fighting against environmental degradation
  • safeguarding everyone’s rights of social participation
  • supporting non-violent conflict resolution
  • defending the rights of individuals

Our Washington, DC Office

Our Washington, DC office is a 501(c)(3) organization that provides expertise on issues related to our mission. We promote exchanges in our program areas through informational programs, study tours and visitor programs; special events, meetings, workshops and conferences; public seminars and training programs; and monitoring of the work of international organizations.

We are an operational foundation, not a grant-making foundation.

About Us

The Heinrich Boll Foundation is a political foundation affiliated with, but independent of, the German Green Party. 

As a 501(c)(3) organization based in Washington, DC, we promote policy reform and political dialogue in our program areas through publications, public seminars, conferences, workshops, study tours and visitor programs. We seek to advance democracy and human rights, protect the environment and climate, and promote the peaceful resolution of conflicts. We also place particular emphasis on gender democracy, meaning social emancipation and equal rights for women and LGBTI communities.
