The Heinrich Boell Foundation, North America, will be hosting Dr. Hermann Ott, Member of the German Federal Parliament and Speaker for climate policy for the German Green Party, on a visit to the East Coast from April 29 – May 3, 2013. Dr. Ott’s visit will focus on the German energy transition, or ‘Energiewende’, and its global implications, with particular focus on the the United States.  He will address questions on why Germany, which is about as sunny as Alaska, rose to become a world leader in solar power, as well as some of the challenges associated with the energy transition, such as the need for a re-designed electricity grid to accommodate intermittent renewable energy sources.

 

Dr. Ott has been a Member of the German Federal Parliament and Speaker for climate policy for the Green Party (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen) since 2009. He is a Member of the Federal Parliament’s Study Commission on growth, prosperity and quality of life. Before his political career, he worked as a scientist, policy advisor and author at the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy, where he was the Director of the Climate Program and head of the Institute’s Berlin office.
