G20 Finance Minister Meeting in Sydney

On February 26, 2014, Nancy Alexander (HBS) participated in a panel discussion on CRI English radio:

"Ever since the financial crisis began in 2008, an annual G20 meeting between all of the world's most important finance ministers and banking chiefs has garnered a lot more attention they otherwise would. Granted, last weekend most people's eyes were in Ukraine but over in Sydney, a closing communique was agreed upon by ministers representing 85 percent of the world's economy to inject some 2 trillion dollars into the world's economy over the next five years, to boost global economic growth by 2 percent plus job creation.

But where will they find the money and how would ministers go about achieving some of those objectives? They also talked about closer cooperation on tackling tax evasion by multinational companies, and even the subject of the much-delayed IMF reforms was broached."

Panelists:

  • Nancy Alexander, Director, Economic Governance Program, Heinrich Boell Foundation, North America
  • Luca Silipo, Managing Director, Chief Economist for Asia Pacific, Natixis
  • Zhao Changhui, Senior analyst, The Export-Import Bank of China
