From October 1st to 4th, Member of the German Parliament Marieluise Beck will be visiting Washington D.C. to attend the sixth U.S.-Central Europe Strategy Forum, to be held in cooperation with the Slovak Presidency of the Visegrád Group. This year’s annual forum will be held under the theme “Reviving Atlanticism in Central Europe: Perils and Possibilities”. The conference will provide a platform for senior officials to discuss topics ranging from geopolitics, European integration and energy security to regional and global economic trends. In addition to participating in the conference, Ms. Beck will hold a range of meetings with the US administration as well as civil society representatives to discuss transatlantic cooperation in the wake of the Ukraine crisis. 

Biography

Marieluise Beck was born in 1952 in Osnabrück. She studied history and sociology in Bielefeld and Heidelberg and has been a member of the Greens since 1980. In 1983, she was elected to the German Bundestag and served as spokesperson of the parliamentary group. After serving as a Member of the Parliament of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen from 1991 to 1994, Ms. Beck was re-elected to the German Bundestag and has been a Member ever since.

From November 1998 to 2005, Ms. Beck was appointed as Federal Government Commissioner for Migration, Refugees and Integration (formerly known as “Federal Government Commissioner for Foreigners’ Issues”). Additionally, she assumed the office of Parliamentary State Secretary in the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth.

Since November 2005, Ms. Beck has served on the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the German Bundestag in which she currently functions as spokesperson on eastern European affairs for the Green parliamentary group. She also holds positions as chairperson of the German-Bosnian Parliamentary Friendship Group of the German Bundestag, member of the German-Ukrainian and German-South Caucasus Parliamentary Friendship Group as well as Member of the Parliamentary Assemblies of the Council of Europe and the OSCE.
