Anton Hofreiter, PhD,  Member of the German Bundestag

From October 20th to 25th, Dr. Anton Hofreiter will embark on his first official visit to the United States since being elected co-chair of the Green parliamentary group in the German Bundestag in October 2013. He will hold a range of meetings at the United Nations in New York as well as with U.S. officials and members of Congress in Washington D.C. Dr. Hofreiter will also meet with a range of civil society representatives, in particular to discuss current challenges and opportunities in the realm of trade and energy policy.

Biography

Born in 1970 in Munich, Anton Hofreiter has been a member of the Green Party since 1986. It was during his first encounter with the German Green Party in 1984 that he discovered his passion for environmental preservation and the importance of advocating for it politically.

Dr. Hofreiter holds a PhD in Botany from the Ludwig-Maximilian-University in Munich and lectured several years as a postdoctoral research fellow in the department of botanical systematics at the University of Munich. As member of the Green Party, he has served on numerous councils, such as the District Council of Greater Munich (since 1996) and the Regional Council for Ecology (since 2001). Before taking up his seat in the German Parliament in 2005, Dr. Hofreiter worked in the State Parliament of Bavaria as a political advisor.

As member of the German Parliament, Dr. Hofreiter served as chairman of the Committee on Transport, Building and Urban Development from 2011 until 2013. Since October 2013, Dr. Hofreiter has served as co-chair of the Parliamentary Group of Alliance 90 / The Greens in the German Parliament.
