Katrin Göring-Eckardt, Chairwoman of the Parliamentary Group of Alliance 90 / The Greens

From April 13th to 17th, Katrin Göring-Eckardt, co-chair of the parliamentary group of Alliance 90 / The Greens, will visit Washington, DC and New York. During her stay she will attend several meetings and discussions with U.S.-American and international politicians, experts and civil society groups. The consultations will cover a range of pressing issues, including the state of the transatlantic alliance, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, international efforts to address the war in Syria and Iraq, as well as domestic social and economic challenges in the U.S.

Katrin Göring-Eckardt has served as chairwoman of the Alliance 90 / The Greens parliamentary group since October 2013. She held the same position from 2002 to 2005 when her party was part of a coalition government. In the 2013 federal elections, Mrs. Göring-Eckardt was running as lead candidate for Alliance 90 / The Greens. Between 2005 and 2013 she served as Vice-President of the German Bundestag. Having been a member of the German Bundestag since 1998, Mrs. Göring-Eckardt has become one of the key figures within the German Greens.

In addition, Katrin Göring-Eckardt served as Head of the Synod of the Protestant Church in Germany from 2009 until 2013. Growing up in the former German Democratic Republic, she was without party affiliation but involved in the opposition group “Church of Solidarity”. In 1989, Mrs. Göring-Eckardt joined the “Democratic Awakening”, in 1990 she became a member of “Democracy Now”, and then served as a member of the  federal spokespersons’ council of Alliance 90 and Alliance 90/The Greens. She continues to be engaged in various civil society organizations like "Action Reconciliation – Service for Peace" and "Against Oblivion – For Democracy."
