Launch of the Transatlantic Partnership on Memory, Responsibility & Transformation

Press Release

Four German fellows will collaborate with UVA faculty and students from March 26th - 30th, 2018, in this weeklong initiative of the UVA Center for German Studies and the Heinrich Böll Foundation North America.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA: During the week of March 26th - 30th, 2018, the UVA Center for German Studies, in collaboration with the Heinrich Böll Foundation North America, will host four visiting fellows from Germany. Each fellow will work closely with a UVA professor to offer students an applied interactive project, exploring a range of intellectual and artistic tools for dealing with the past. Fellows were chosen for their expertise in activism, public history, photography, museum curation, and documentary theater.

The initiative challenges students to work with fellows and UVA faculty to consider how societies can teach and memorialize the past. Through art, activism, and scholarship, students will address how societies can confront difficult chapters of history, from slavery and segregation in the United States to colonialism, genocide, and dictatorship in Germany. This initiative also provides students and the wider Charlottesville community an opportunity to engage in constructive dialogue on the topic of historical inequality, injustice, and responsibility.

For more information on the collaboration and associated events, please contact Nicole Johnson.

This initiative is co-sponsored by the Collective Response: Moving Forward Fund of the UVA College of Arts and Sciences.

The UVA Center for German Studies serves as a hub for interdisciplinary activity, seeking to broaden and deepen the long and significant history of transatlantic and German-American relations.
