The Heinrich Böll Foundation’s regional office in New Delhi coordinates the work of the foundation in India since 2002 with a focus on natural resources and sustainable development, minorities and gender in India’s democracy and supporting the role of Indian civil society in regional and international fora.
Despite the country’s economic growth and prosperous middle class, social inequality as well as religious and ethnic conflicts in India have intensified. Corruption, inadequate infrastructure and ecological crises are visible in everyday life. India faces a major challenge in finding a balance between a sustainable usage of natural resources and further strengthening socioeconomic development processes.
Our office in Delhi supports the critical discussion of alternative development paradigms and dialogs about protecting biodiversity and natural resources in a climate sensitive and socially just manner.
We support civil society organisations to voice their interests towards India’s role as part of a changing global order. Partners of the foundation work in the field of documentation of communal violence and with a focus on LGBTIQA+ initiatives. Geographic focus of our work is on the northeastern region of India and on a constructive exchange between civil society actors of the South Asian region.
