Reevaluating the US-German Relationship
Earlier this year, we commissioned two policy papers to assess the best strategic courses for Germany as it navigates an increasingly fractured transatlantic relationship. The Trump administration's recent National Security Strategy has only underscored the urgency of this reassessment, reading less like a partnership document and more like a blueprint for disengagement.
In the context of rising authoritarianism on both sides of the Atlantic, Germany faces a twofold challenge: de-risking and rebuilding. Germany and democratic leaders in Europe must shore up vulnerabilities in defense capabilities, supply chains, and critical infrastructure while at the same time linking arms with like-minded, values-aligned people across borders to articulate a compelling vision for a peaceful, democratic, and sustainable future.
