This Spring, Hbs North America selected its second round of Transatlantic Media Fellows, this time for its Digital Societies program. After a competitive selection process open to both European and American journalists, four outstanding fellows were selected.
This past week, Italian freelance journalist Giorgio Ghiglione just returned from his research trip to the US. During his travels to New York and New Jersey, he met with activists from the Repair Coalition, a lobby fighting for the rights to repair electronic devices, advocating both for environmental sustainability and digital rights. Giorgio also conducted research with NYC Mesh, exploring community-based wireless networks that offer an alternative to private internet providers, free of charge.
German Fellow Lena Schnabl completed her research on electronic voting in California this February. We are eagerly looking forward to her stories. Sonja Alvarez, a journalist with the German daily newspaper Der Tagesspiegel, and US-based freelance journalist Jay Cassano will conduct their research within the coming weeks. Alvarez will travel to California to meet with experts developing wearable devices and discuss the role of big data in improving health care. Cassano plans to travel to Amsterdam, Barcelona, and Berlin, investigating the diverse topics of European data brokerage regulations, racial data collection and the participatory planning of smart cities.
